What is discourse?

An extended communication (often interactive) dealing with some particular topic (freedictionary.com)

A language or system of representation that has developed socially in order to make and circulate a coherent set of meanings about an important topic area (Fiske, 1987).

"A body of ideas, concepts and beliefs which become established as knowledge or as an accepted world view. These ideas become a powerful framework for understanding and action in social life" (Bilton et al., 1996, p. 657)

The social and cultural framework of institutions and assumptions that organize everyday language, thought and behaviour (Rowe, 1999).

The objective of a discourse is the "recognition of legitimacy through the misrecognition of arbitrariness" (Bourdieu, 1994, p. 163).
